Amherst Supplement Essays
Consistently ranked as one of the nation's top liberal arts colleges, Amherst has a reputation both as a beacon of academic excellence and as an especially well regarded feeder school for medical, law, and business programs. As you might imagine, the competition is stiff; most applicants boast excellent GPAs and top SAT scores, but less than 16% are accepted.
Amherst's 2012 application supplement requires all applicants to submit a 300 word personal statement to go along with the one written for the Common App. In lieu of formal prompts, Amherst supplies five quotes, several of them inspired by or relating to Amherst events, and encourages students to respond originally and personally. Amherst underscores the importance of the supplemental essay by reminding students that at a school where interviews are not an option essays "provide you with an opportunity to speak to us". If this sounds a little daunting, don't panic just yet. We're here to help.
